It starts with the hopes and dreams of wanting to create or grow a family.

Couples and individuals choose adoption for many reasons. It’s an emotional process for everyone involved, and adoptive parents travel their own unique journeys that lead to adoption.

It’s estimated that there are currently between one to two million couples waiting to adopt in the United States, meaning there are around 36 couples waiting for every one child who is placed for adoption.

Why are couples and individuals waiting to adopt?

These are among the most common reasons.

1. Infertility

One in eight couples has trouble getting pregnant or sustaining a pregnancy, according to the CDC National Survey of Family Growth.

2. Genetic Risks

Some are at risk for passing on serious genetic or medical conditions if they were to have a natural birth.

3. Health Problems

A potential birth mother might have health complications that would put her life or a baby’s life at risk if she were to become pregnant.

4. Help a Child

Some may have the desire and means to start a family and want to give a child the opportunity to grow up in a loving, stable family environment. For some, this may also be a religious conviction to help and serve.

5. Single Individuals

If someone has the desire to start a family but has not met a partner, they may wish to adopt to have the opportunity to parent and provide for a child.

6. Same Sex Couples

Same sex couples may be motivated to parent and build a family, therefore choosing adoption as a way to commit themselves to a child and to parenting.

7. Being Adopted Themselves

Adoptees appreciate adoption firsthand. They may wish to provide a child with the same opportunity they were given and apply the tools they’ve developed by being in this special role themselves.

In order to adopt and prepare, adoptive parents go through a process, which includes home studies and often counseling. The adoption journey is one of the most profound experiences for birth moms and adoptive parents, and Destiny provides adoptive parents with services and support each step of the way.

One of Destiny’s adoptive dads said:

“New babies bring lots of emotions. We received counseling because we wanted to give our baby the best start possible (even though no one could prepare us for the lack of sleep!). We wanted to be ready for the changes and new beginnings.”
