When your child is sick and in the hospital, the last thing you want to think about is where your family is going to stay or where your next meal is coming from. For families who drive long distances to hospitals in the Tampa Bay area, Ronald McDonald Houses are a lifesaver.
As supporters of families in need, Ronald McDonald House Charities also values and supports adoptive families. “When wonderful families open their homes to adopted children, they are making a huge commitment and sacrifice,” said Alison Barrick the charity’s marketing and communications manager.
Ronald McDonald House Charities of Tampa Bay operates four houses providing 80 bedrooms every night. The organization helps 2,000 families each year, including Destiny Adoption families.
“It’s a huge sense of relief for all our families,” said Barrick. “They are already stressed about having a child in the hospital or anxious about their adoption process. Staying at a Ronald McDonald House allows them to be more at ease and better advocates for their child.”
What many people may not know is that Ronald McDonald Houses are available to any family that has to drive more than an hour to a hospital for treatment or their adoption. They do not discriminate based on income or any other factors. The houses in the Tampa Bay area are beautiful, comfortable and centrally located for easy accessibility.
Thanks to generous donors, dedicated staff members and countless volunteers, they can provide shelter, meals and comfort to families, when in these situations. “Knowing that we are making a meaningful and lifelong impact on every family that walks through our doors is incredible,” said Barrick. “So many families tell us that they don’t know what they would have done without Ronald McDonald House.”
She has countless stories to tell about the adoptive families she has met over the years. “The capacity of people to give – of their lives and their hearts – it’s impossible to describe,” she said.
