If you research in vitro and adoption, you’ll find stories of both joy and heartache.

The experience of each has its rewards and challenges. There is the lucky couple who becomes pregnant after the first embryo transfer. There is the family’s happiness when chosen by a birth mother as an adoption match.

About In Vitro Pros and Cons

In vitro fertilization (IVF) success depends on factors, such as maternal age, reproductive history, cause of infertility and lifestyle. When considering IVF and choosing a clinic, it’s important to be aware that pregnancy rates are different than live birth rates.

According to a National Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) Outcomes Report. In the United States, the live birth rate in 2015 for each IVF cycle started based on a woman’s age was:

  • 41-43% for women under age 35
  • 33-36% for women ages 35 to 37
  • 23-27% for women ages 38 to 40
  • 13-18% for women ages over 40

IVF Pros

One benefit of successful IVF is having a baby of your own with similar physical features and personality traits as you and your spouse or partner. Another benefit is the opportunity to experience pregnancy firsthand, carry a baby and being part of the development process.

IVF Cons

An obstacle to IVF can be the cost. A basic IVF cycle averages between $12,000 to $15,000 per treatment. IVF coverage is provided by some insurance companies but a majority do not provide coverage. IVF treatment success is an unknown factor, which can be stressful. In addition, there is the physical demand and side effects from the medication and injections, such as weight gain, fatigue and nausea.

About Adoption Pros and Cons

It’s estimated that there are between one to two million couples in the U.S. who are waiting to adopt. But how do you know if adoption is right for you?

Adoption is an emotional process for everyone involved, but the benefits of adoption can be significant. Choosing to adopt a child and the adoption journey creates some of the most profound moments in your life.

Adoption Pros

Adoption gives you the joy of adding a child to your family and fulfilling your dreams of raising a child. When you adopt, you are providing a child with a much-needed loving home. You can offer love, stability and support to give your child the confidence they need to succeed in life.

Adoption Cons

There is the wait for a match and the cost. Private domestic adoption averages between $20,000 to $40,000. As with IVF, there is also the unknown — in Florida, the birth mom has to sign over rights to the baby before she is discharged, which is generally 48 hours, and the paperwork is not done until that time.

Whether you chose the journey of IVF or adoption, it is a journey of love. You can not understand it until you experience it, and it can be difficult to find others to talk with and hard for others to understand.

Little things like hearing parents complain about their kids, seeing a pregnant woman in public or attending a baby shower can be painful when you are struggling with infertility or trying to choose between IVF and adoption. Believe this is the beginning of your unique journey of love as a parent, which will have challenges that are outweighed by the rewards.

You don’t really understand human nature unless you know why a child on a merry-go-round will wave at his parents every time around—and why his parents will always wave back.William D. Tammeus
