Waiting for adoption can be a long process. You won’t know how long it will take, and that can be stressful. Fortunately, there are plenty of productive ways to pass the time while you wait.

These activities range from stress relief to preparation. There is no “right way” to wait for adoption news, so give a few of these ideas a try.

Exercise

Raising a child is physically demanding. If you’re not already physically active, now is the time to start. Exercising can mean anything from taking a walk once a day to joining a kickboxing class. Sign up for a yoga class or join a CrossFit gym.

Whatever form of exercise you choose, the benefits will be numerous. You will be preparing for the rigors of raising a child and releasing stress at the same time. Plus, developing healthy habits will improve your well-being and make you a better role model for your child.

Do Some Research

Chances are you’ve already read a zillion articles and books about adoption and child-rearing, but if you haven’t, there are some good resources out there. Reading up on the process can help prepare you for what’s to come.

Don’t just read adoption books either. Books about adoption tend to focus mostly on the particular problems and blessings of adoption. Read books and articles about parenting — after all, kids are kids, and you are about to experience the struggles and triumphs of parenting. Be prepared!

Take a Vacation (or Staycation)

This might be your last opportunity for a while to take a vacation without kids in tow. Plan a trip with your significant other (or go solo) somewhere you’ve always wanted to go.

If you can’t afford a trip away from home, take some time to relax and pamper yourself. Whether that means soaking in the bathtub by candlelight or reading a novel with a glass of wine, you owe it to yourself to relish the time before adoption.

Prepare Your Home

Consider taking some time to prepare your home for your new arrival. Setting up a nursery, getting a car seat ready, buying toys and clothes, tidying up around the house and baby-proofing are all important steps you can tackle before you receive the good news.

Doing too much prep work before you know for sure stresses some people out, but if you think you can handle it, you’ll be happy you did while you had more available free time. Get ready for parenthood! Once your child arrives, every task will compete for your time.

This is by no means an exhaustive list. There are plenty of ways to pass the time while you wait to adopt, but the one thing you should not do is stress out any more than you have to. Once you’ve done your part and you’re waiting for the call, worrying won’t make the time pass faster. Relax, get your to-do list done and prepare for the next step. You’ve got this!
