Today I would love to encourage all of us to focus on life. This has been a hard year. This has been a rough couple of weeks, no matter which way you leaned. TODAY whether celebrating or weeping, CHOOSE LIFE. What does that mean? I’m glad you asked! First, some facts:
FOSTER CARE FACTS
There are approximately 440,000 children currently in foster care across our nation and our need for foster care homes is at an all time high. Close to 30,000 kids between the age of 18-21 years of age are exiting the system annually. The average age in the system is 6 1/2 years. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Simply google 2020 foster care statistics and you will have a bevy of information so you can see for yourself the incredible need for people who advocate for these children and their lives.
But now we’ve seen it and like the author of the book The God of Small Things, Arundhati Roy, said “The trouble is that once you see it, you can’t unsee it. And once you’ve seen it, keeping quiet, saying nothing, becomes as political an act as speaking out. There’s no innocence. Either way, you’re accountable.” We definitely can’t unsee all of these numbers each that represents an innocent child. So now what?
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
Foster parenting isn’t for everyone but there is a role everyone can play in the foster care system. Here is a link (CLICK HERE) to begin to discover ways that you can begin your journey or help the great need. All across the states you will find local organizations that give opportunities to do hands on help in your own community. You might find not only a great sense of significance but you might initially start with service in the foster care community and eventually decide that adopting a foster care child is something that you and your family can begin to imagine. The beautiful thing is any help in such an overrun system is greatly needed and sincerely important to so many children and those that care for them daily.
NATIONAL ADOPTION AWARENESS MONTH
This month for National Adoption Awareness, you will have the opportunity, if you choose to pause and listen, to hear thousands of voices advocating in the foster care system, who are lending their voices in hopes of finding permanency for children and teens across our nation and support for those who never find that forever home. Their is an amazing passionate movement that is the closest thing to pure unconditional love that the world has ever seen.
Let’s go back to that idea, CHOOSE LIFE! To us at Destiny Adoption, it’s so much bigger than an expectant mom choosing to carry their child, to choose adoption or to parent. We can’t stop there because so much life happens after that. Many of us can’t imagine the affect of our kindness, time, resources, and love not only for a foster child but also on their family for generations to come. We are determined and extremely moved to make sure that we are doing what we can to engage wonderful people like you with the opportunities that we all have to CHOOSE LIFE for a child already born and waiting on someplace and someone to finally call home.
