Birth moms, you know your baby deserves to be loved, accepted and receive the best start in life.

Adoptive families, you know the honor of being chosen to provide this love, acceptance and the best start to your adopted child.

Birth moms and adoptive families often have more in common than they realize. They both want the same thing — a positive experience for their child and for themselves. How can you achieve this?

When it comes to adoption (and life), make these five New Year’s resolutions to allow for a positive year.

What do you want in life? Get clear about it. Give your thoughts, time and attention to that. If you were planning a trip and wanted to go to Italy, you’d be thinking about Italy. Don’t let thoughts of other destinations take up your attention.

Accept that you deserve good things. If you believe that your child deserves to be loved, accepted and receive the best in life, then believe that for yourself too. Remember, your beliefs and actions model behavior for your child. What are you going to teach?

Take care of yourself physically, mentally and emotionally in order to make room and be ready for what you want in life. If you’re facing an unplanned pregnancy, for example, and want to place your baby for adoption, you need to care for yourself physically and emotionally for the health of you and your baby. If you’re adopting, you need to prepare physically and emotionally for sleepless nights and a welcome, but significant, change to your life.

Stop. If obstacles, delays and changes get you down, remember that they often lead you right to who and where you need to be. If you spend your time struggling with worry, grief and fear, you’re going to exhaust yourself and maybe get too distracted to stay on course.

Do you remember you deserve good things? If not, go back to resolution number two. Once you decide what you want, and give yourself the self-care and preparation needed, then allow it to be achieved. Let go. You’ve done your part. Breathe (frequently). Trust that the right people will show up in your life to offer you the guidance and help you need (and allow them to help you!). Life has a way of unfolding in perfect timing . . . when we allow it.

Now, we’re going to allow a plane to take us to Italy for some warm, delicious pizza and decedent chocolate gelato. Happy New Year!
